Barcelona could possibly sign their prime target for free this winter

Barcelona under Ronald Koeman has been linked with several superstars including Memphis Depay, Gini Wijnaldum, Eric Garcia, and so on. However, before Koeman took to office, the Blaugrana were heavily linked with Bayern Munich’s versatile defender, David Alaba.

More from Everything Barca

The Austrian defender has secured a spot as one of the best centre-backs last season after a dominant display with Bayern Munich. The 28-year-old has played a crucial role in the treble-winning squad of Hansi Flick as the left-back was converted into makeshift centre-back due to several injuries in the squad. However, Alaba has thrived in the new position that has seen him being linked with several other clubs as well including Manchester City.

According to the El Desmarque, the Austrian international has reportedly turned down a four-year contract renewal deal. Bayern Munich was willing to offer their star man 11 million euros a season along with 6 million as bonuses, however, it seems like the centre-back has his heart set elsewhere.

Since Alaba’s contract runs out in the summer of 2021, Barca could potentially start negotiating a deal with the player and his agent from January onwards.

The plausible signing of David Alaba could prove to be a setting stone in improving the team’s defence. Alaba’s presence would provide healthy competition to Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet for a starting spot. Alaba could also give Jordi Alba a run for his money since the Austrian is primarily a left-back.

What do you make of the possible signing of David Alaba on a free transfer next summer?
