Real Madrid had shown serious interest to snatch a generational talent from Barcelona

Real Madrid under the last few years under Florentino Perez have adopted the same recruitment strategy that once Barcelona followed. Which was to sign more young talents rather than signing expensive marquee players. The Catalan side has been using the recruitment strategy since its inception, however, under Josep Maria Bartomeu the focus has shifted towards record-breaking signings such as Ousmane Dembele, Antoine Griezmann, and Philippe Coutinho.

It has been reported by El Desmarque that Los Blancos had once shown a great deal of interest to sign Ronald Araujo who then played for Boston River in the Uruguayan top-flight division. However, before Florentino Perez could get his hands on the young South American defender, Barca had already agreed to terms.

The following week saw Araujo complete his move to Spain and was then allocated to Barca’s B team. Barca managed to sign the player for 1.7 million euros excluding additional bonuses and even managed to get done before Madrid could lay their hands on the player.

Fast forward to today, Ronald Araujo is Ronald Koeman‘s third-choice centre-back and the young Uruguayan will certainly have an important role to play for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

However, Barca still lacks a fourth centre-back as Samuel Umtiti is not part of Ronald Koeman’s plans and will most likely be sold this winter transfer market. The Catalans will once again attempt to sign Eric Garcia from Manchester City in January. Garcia and Araujo will most likely be the second choice centre-back pairing if the deal goes through.
