Ter Stegen has been the most consistent keeper for the Catalans since his arrival from Borrusia Monchengladbach in 2014. He is one of the futures of the club and at the age of 28, if he decides to sign a five-year contract, he will effectively be tying himself to Barcelona till the end of his professional career.
The negotiations have been lengthy but respectful as the keeper understands the club’s financial crisis but also believes that his time playing on the field justifies his wage demands. On his part, he never listened to any offers apart from Barca’s.
The keeper got a lot of offers from many clubs last season as they thought that they could pry away the keeper after Barcelona’s disaster season.
Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Juventus approached him for his signature and many would have succumbed to such big names however, Ter Stegen stayed loyal to Blaugrana.
According to SPORT, the Spanish giants have agreed to improve his contract and although his wages will increase only slightly in the first year, it will increase significantly for the years to follow.
This was the best deal the Catalans could bring as their financial situation is still very shaky. Although no ideal, Ter Stegen understands the situation and as he loves the club and the city, it is most likely that he will sign the contract and effectively end his career in the Catalan capital.
Will Ter Stegen become the greatest Barca goalkeeper?
