Barcelona president reveals European Super League decision.

In a shocking turn of events, Barcelona’s president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has resigned along with his board of members. This comes as a shock as they were about to challenge the motion of no confidence before this decision. While making the announcement of their resignation, Bartomeu also informed the fans and the media that Barcelona had agreed to be a part of the European Super League which is in the making.

The departing president during his farewell speech gave some insights about the new European Super League and the club’s stance on it,

"“[On Monday], the board of directors approved the requirements to participate in a future European Super League, a project promoted by the big clubs in Europe which will guarantee the future financial sustainability of the club.”Source ESPN"

He went on to add that the new league which was being proposed by the elites of Europe would help the Catalan club financially as they reported a few weeks back that their debts had tolled to a massive 448 million euro figure. He said,

"“We can say with pride that we are the highest valued club in the world. We have achieved that ahead of clubs owned by States and billionaires, all while keeping the club in the hands of the members. And the European Super League guarantees the club will remain in the members’ hands.”"

The Super League itself is an unnerving thing. Although it is being supported by clubs such as Liverpool and Manchester United, one has to think about what it will do to domestic leagues. Only 18 clubs will take part in the league and it might end up replacing the UEFA Champions League altogether.

FIFA is the main force behind the Super League as although they host the biggest competition in the world in terms of international football, their monopoly over club football is not that strong. The FIFA Club World Cup is their only competition and even that is a relatively less prestigious tournament.

Thus should they be able to get the backing of major European teams for the league, they will once again trample UEFA and get hold of club football as well even if it means destroying domestic leagues and ending the beloved Champions League.
