Barcelona are plotting their biggest challenge of the near future, which is to hold onto Lionel Messi‘s services beyond 2021.

Barcelona are going to have presidential elections soon and a new president as well as directorial board could assume office by the end of the 2020/21 campaign. Joan Laporta is in candidacy for another tenure at the Camp Nou, whereas Victor Font also has ambitious plans and is planning for the club with his own vision as well.

Josep Maria Bartomeu’s resignation has meant that the elections could go forward earlier than expected, but Font has already mapped his plans and his biggest priority is to keep Lionel Messi at the club. The Argentina international was vocal about wanting to leave the club during the summer but ultimately ended up staying.

Victor Font has now made his plans clear for the club and the very first one would be to make a managerial change. The 48-year-old has already cleared the air on Ronald Koeman and insisted that the Dutchman will not be in charge of the club regardless of how well they perform under him, should he be elected the president of the club.

In a bid to keep Messi at bay, he will look to bring back Pep Guardiola to Catalonia. The 33-year-old has been full of admiration for the former coach, under whom he enjoyed some of the greatest years of his career which included a hat-trick of Ballon d’Or awards on the back of four successive prizes, as well as two European crowns in three years.

The 50-year-old is currently in the final year of his contract at Manchester City and having won everything possible in England may leave the club at the end of this season. A move to Barca must certainly not be ruled out and if Guardiola does arrive, it will mean that Messi ends up staying and possibly retiring at Barca for sure.
