Barcelona vice captain Gerard Pique relayed the club’s broader issues rather than personal problems in a bid to force Josep Maria Bartomeu’s exit.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has been a titan figure in the history of the club. Besides being exquisite on the pitch, the work he has done for the club off it has earned the player several plaudits as well. One of his latest roles, wherein he forced Josep Maria Bartomeu out was accompanied by Lionel Messi, to begin an early turn in proceedings at the club.

Messi gave a very candid interview whilst announcing his stay at Barca but also accused the former chief of running matters very poorly. The Argentine insisted that he had not found happiness lately within the club as it was nothing short of a disaster and incohesive unit. Another bout was taken by him when Luis Suarez left.

Suarez was effectively kicked out of the club against his wishes and the treatment conferred to a player of his status at the Camp Nou was not right. In an Instagram post, Messi wrote that nothing which happens at the club surprised him and this signaled yet another pressure-mounting move to force the president out of the club.

Pique reportedly dug the final nail in the 57-year-old’s coffin as he not only opened up about his own treatment but spoke more from a general perspective. The World Cup winner broke the silence on the salary reduction moves taken by the club due to its financial laxness in the past as well as the quick firings of both, Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien.

For the time being, Carles Tusquets is the interim Barca president and there will be a fixed board of directors next year. One of their main objectives will be to keep the veterans at the club happy, especially Messi who has threatened to leave in 2021 unless there is a positive change with regard to how the club is being run.
