Xavi could well be the next Barcelona coach but he wants the club to welcome in at least three new personnel before accepting the role formally.

Ronald Koeman has done a good job so far to steady a sinking Barcelona ship which he took over from Quique Setien at the back of a morale destroying 8-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. While the Dutchman was signed on a two-year contract, the next likely presidential candidates for the club don’t seem to be big fans of him.

Joan Laporta and Victor Font who seem to be head and shoulders above any other potential contender have both mentioned their desire to bring back Pep Guardiola to the Camp Nou for a second tenure. Besides the Manchester City manager, the name of club legend and current Al Sadd boss Xavi is also being talked about.

Following Ernesto Valverde’s sacking, then sporting director Eric Abidal did visit Qatar to meet with Xavi and also offered him a contract. However, the Spaniard did not accept the job at that point in time due to his commitments with his current club but a major driving force behind his rejection may also have been the presence of Bartomeu’s board.

El Desmarque has now claimed that the 40-year-old is ready to take up the hot seat if an offer comes calling but will need three more personnel to ensure that the club is being run well. First is Carles Puyol who he trusts very much. The former central defender will likely play an advisor’s role on the first-team proceedings, working closely with the team and board.

Apart from his ex-teammate on club and national level, Xavi also wants two sporting directors appointed. This is to ensure that there are no lapses as in the case of Abidal and all major decisions pertaining to the club are taken on double backing and in unison. One of his closest allies in Joan Vila, and Jordi Cruyff are the names being suggested.
