Barcelona once again commit a serious mistake as the club has included a special clause in Gerard Pique‘s contract that is similar to what Messi once had

Barcelona had announced the contract renewals of Gerard Pique, Frenkie de Jong, Clement Lenglet and Marc-Andre ter Stegen following their resounding victory in the first Champions League fixture of the 2020/21 campaign.

More from Everything Barca

Pique, the vice-captain of Barca, agreed to a contract extension until the summer of 2024 which would then see the player bow out at the age of 37. However, what has caught the attention of many is that the club has included a special clause in Pique’s contract that Lionel Messi once had.

The special clause is that the defender can leave the club during any transfer window if he wishes to. Lionel Messi had a similar clause in his contract which he wanted to exercise this summer in order to sign for Manchester City. Fortunately or unfortunately, the clause had expired which then blocked the 33-year-old’s plausible move.

In the case of Gerard Pique, even if the vice-captain decided to leave the club next summer, it would not as big of a loss as that of Leo Messi.

Clause mentions that Pique can leave the club at any time, however, it is only valid if the player decides to leave the club for a noneuropean destination such as the MLS.

Pique is certainly an important player, however, the Spanish defender has regressed over the years rapidly.  The 33-year-old centre-back himself stated that he would be the first one to leave if the club requires younger players.

The issue with this clause is that it should never be included once again in any other player’s contract. Such a clause puts the club in a tight space as the player can leave at any time. This also gives the player supreme power or authority to negotiate with the club as he can leave as per his convenience. A contract when signed is meant to be honored and that’s how it should be at Barca.
