Barcelona receive a freeway route to sign David Alaba of Bayern Munich who will be available as a free agent next summer transfer window

Barcelona has a free shot at signing David Alaba of Bayern Munich next season. The Bayern Munich defender’s contract is set to run out next summer. The European champions have publicly announced that the Austrian’s contract will not be renewed due to financial reasons.

More from Everything Barca

The 28-year-old versatile defender reportedly demanded higher pay, however, Bayern refused to meet the player’s demand which is why Alaba will be available as a free agent next summer. Barca has been linked with the player for quite some time, however, the Catalans will have to battle it out with Real Madrid and a few clubs from the Premier League who have also shown a great deal of interest.

The possible free signing of David Alaba sounds lucrative for Ronald Koeman and the club, however, the Catalans have their eye on Eric Garcia of Manchester City as well. The Blaugrana will have to make a crucial decision amongst the two options given the current financial crisis that the club is facing.

David Alaba certainly offers a lot more as the 28-year-old can play anywhere across the defensive backline and can even be deployed in the midfield. However, the signing of Eric Garcia has one major advantage for Barca over Alaba. The age factor, Garcia is currently 19 and Koeman wants to build a team for the future which may see Barca opt for the Spaniard over the Austrian.
