Angel Di Maria is the player in question. Messi admires Di Maria, not just as his compatriot but also because of how good he is as a player. The Argentine had been pushing the Blaugrana to sign the former Real Madrid midfielder since a few years, but the 31-year-old has now cemented his place at Paris Saint-Germain, though not for much longer perhaps.
His contract at the Parc des Princes comes to an end in June 2021, meaning he is allowed to discuss a pre-contract agreement from January 1. Angel Di Maria is yet to make contact with the PSG directors regarding any renewal, but regardless of how things progress, some of the best clubs across Europe are expected to monitor his situation in France very closely.
Juventus may well be his next destination considering the Serie A side’s record of landing free agents in recent years. Ronaldo believes that a player of Di Maria’s calibre could help them reach the summit of Europe, an achievement which they have craved since over two decades and have fallen short of innumerable number of times in recent years.
While Messi may want the Catalans to go for alternative options now due to Di Maria’s age, they must consider bringing him in knowing that he is available potentially for free. The Argentine’s targets like Lautaro Martinez may well be beyond Barcelona’s affordability considering their horrible financial situation, which has put them on the verge of insolvency.
Despite his age, Di Maria will be a super signing for Barcelona and add much needed creativity into the midfield, thereby allowing Messi to deliver on an even higher gear in the final third. Should Ronaldo and Messi both probe for the midfielder’s signing, he may prefer the latter given the nationality factor and would also want to prove a point to Real Madrid.
Who do you think Di Maria will opt for between Barca and Juve?
