Barcelona presidential candidate, Joan Laporta, admires Jurgen Klopp

Two men who are currently hoping to win the role of the next President of Barcelona are, Joan Laporta and Victor Font. While Font wants to bring Xavi Hernandez into the managerial seat of the club, the latter wishes to bring a more renowned and successful coach to Barcelona.

According to the Spanish outlet, Okdiario, Laporta is hoping to bring Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, to the hot seat. The man who lost in the 2015 elections to Josep Bartomeu is hopeful that he will be the one to win this time although he is facing tough competition from Font.

Laporta already held the presidential seat from 2003 to 2010 and he wishes to return to his previous position. His choice of Klopp is also not strange as the German manager has proved himself to be capable enough of lifting clubs who are going through tough times.

Klopp showed his magic in the Bundesliga when he knocked Bayern Munich off the throne and almost defeated them in the UEFA Champions League final as well, with Borussia Dortmund. In England, he found even more success but he had to build the Liverpool team up from scratch and he had a few difficult seasons in the beginning. However, he managed to take Liverpool from mid-table finishes to becoming the kings of Europe.

Laporta is hoping that the German can perform some of the same magic in Barcelona as well. The club has fallen a lot since 2016 and ever since the Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar front three was broken, their defensive flaws became too evident. Last season was the last straw for the Spanish giants as they were humbled 8-2 in Lisbon by Bayern Munich.

However, bringing Klopp won’t be an easy task as the manager has already stated beforehand that he wishes to take a year off from football. In an interview with Sport Buzzer, he mentioned that he would be fulfilling his contract with Liverpool and then take a year off from football completely.

Having said that, if re-electing former Barca president, Laporta, would eventually end up in the sacking of Koeman for the arrival of Klopp, then the Catalan giants could be in deep trouble. Though Klopp opts for a similar formation that suits the current Barca squad, usually using 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with Liverpool, the players playing for each of the clubs differ drastically.

While Koeman’s starting lineup might consist of promising youngsters in the attack while having Frenkie de Jong and Philippe Coutinho in the midfield, the club needs a massive overhaul in the midfield and defensive areas.

With Coutinho injured, Koeman has no alternative no. 10 except using Lionel Messi himself. But with Messi reported to be leaving next season, Barca really needs another alternative. Meanwhile, the two defensive midfielders alongside De Jong, Sergio Busquets and Miralem Pjanic, are both nearing retirement.

The defense is another major area for improvement for Barca as only Clement Lenglet and Sergino Dest have shown a true potential to compete against other top defenders in the world.

Liverpool are currently without their star defender, Virgil van Dijk, and with other defenders also injured, the Premier League champions are truly struggling this season. Though they have recovered from the embarrassing 7-2 loss to Aston Villa a month ago, Klopp has an important test against Manchester City next.

With both Koeman and Klopp operating under a similar philosophy, what Barca truly needs is a coach like Xavi, who not only knows the true sense of Blaugrana DNA but also be brave enough to drop players like Antoine Griezmann, who are struggling to perform. Barca needs a coach who would bench struggling veterans like Antoine Griezmann, Busquets, or Gerard Pique, and allows young blood to take over the Nou Camp.

While Koeman aspires to do the same, only time will tell whether the next Barca president even opts to extend his stay beyond his short contract.
