Lionel Messi of Barcelona is at crossroads with Ronald Koeman over the plausible salary reduction this season after incurring losses during the pandemic

The players of Barcelona have once again been asked to accept a reduction in their wages as the club nears bankruptcy. The Catalans have already declared a massive loss worth 97 million euros during the 2019/20 season. Currently, the clubface a serious debt issue and has decided to introduce a pay-cut in the player’s wages to cope with the financial difficulty.

Reports now confirm that Lionel Messi, the captain of the senior squad, stands against the motion of accepting another pay-cut. The players accepted a pay-cut last season, however, another pay-cut seems to be too harsh.

Messi, in particular, does not want to accept a pay-cut as his contract runs out next summer. Generally, when clubs reduce a player’s salary, it is readjusted in the following seasons. However, that is not possible with Leo Messi.

The 33-year-old wants to earn his salary in full until his contract runs out and so do several other players from the squad. Rumors now state that Manchester City will be preparing an offer this January to sign Messi next season.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that he will not return to the Camp Nou despite Victor Font and Joan Laporta wanting him as the manager ahead of Koeman. Many believe that Guardiola’s decision could be because Lionel Messi is all set to arrive at the Etihad next season.
