Barcelona have more losses than gains from Ousmane Dembele’s sale.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele in the 2020 summer transfer window. However, the transfer did not take place as no agreement was reached between the Spaniards and the Red Devils. Multiple reports are now suggesting that the English giants will return in the January transfer window in 2021 for the former Borussia Dortmund star.

More from Everything Barca

United have had a problem replacing Cristiano Ronaldo on their right flanks since his departure to the Santiago Bernabeu in the year 2009. They landed big names such as Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez, Wilfried Zaha, Memphis Depay, Antonio Valencia, and Daniel James but none seemed to match the Portuguese winger’s impact. Ten years on, as Manchester United still look for a solid winger, they have now turned towards the Barcelona winger.

Blaugrana too have been heavily linked with their own attacking reinforcement in Olympic Lyon’s Memphis Depay since the summer transfer window. The Dutch international is reportedly pushing for a move to the Nou Camp in the January transfer window of 2021 as Ronald Koeman is extremely fond of him and that he would be in the manager’s main plans.

The issue for the Spanish giants is that to ensure a successful transfer of Depay, they will have to first get out of their financial crisis. Barca are currently planning to sell 5 players including Dembele to raise some funds. While Dembele remains the most costly member on that list, with only a little over one year remaining in his contract, his departure might be a massive loss for the Catalans.

United are looking to securing Dembele for cheap given Barca’s economic hardship along with Dembele soon to become a free agent in 2022. With Depay’s arrival being one of the priorities for the club, they might be forced to make this transfer to recover some funds, ultimately creating a major loss for the club given the amount they paid to acquire Dembele from Dortmund.

Dembele’s career at Barca has been nothing short of a simple flop, given the lack of return for his enormous transfer fee. His performances at the Signal Iduna Park had every Catalan expecting big things from the Frenchman and he did not seem to meet their demands with his inconsistent performances and injuries.

A move to the Theatre of Dreams will see the winger team up with French international teammates such as Paul Pogba and Antony Martial. If the Red Devils manage to play Dembele in a secure system, he might just be able to revive his status back to world-class again. A move to the Premier League will be fantastic for the 23-year-old.

Should Barca sell Dembele or give him more time?
