Lionel Messi has been praised for his leadership amid chaos

Former Argentina midfielder, Juan Pablo Sorin, has commented on the recent performance of fellow countryman and national legend, Lionel Messi. Sorin reckons that the chaotic summer that Messi went through in Barcelona has turned him into even more of a leader for his club and country.

Messi went through a very rough time during August and September as speculations about his career were everywhere in the media. The Catalan side endured through a very rough season last season as they surrendered the La Liga trophy to arch-rivals, Real Madrid and were unable to win any trophy for the first time in many years. However, Messi’s decision to leave the club came after the embarrassing 8-2 exit in the UEFA Champions League to Bayern Munich.

When the Argentine announced his desire to leave the club, other elite European clubs were ready with contracts however, ex-president, Josep Bartomeu denied Messi from leaving the club as he mentioned that his contract clause had expired and if anyone wanted to buy him they would have to pay 700 million euros.

Messi decided against taking his club to the court and decided to honor his last year of the contract. His season has not started off quite well and most of his goals are coming from the penalty spot. However, according to Pablo Sorin, Messi has not let the controversies get to his head and he has in fact matured through the chaos. According to him, Messi is acting as a leader more now to keep the club’s unity.

In an interview with TyC Sports, the ex-footballer said,

"“I see Messi more and more as a leader and more mature. In Barcelona he has had to experience a very chaotic moment, but he responded quickly on the pitch. He’s also doing very well in the national team.”“Leo transferred his fight into good performances on the pitch and that is very good for the Argentines. He suffered defeats in Bolivia in the past and returned to play and win there, it is a strong demonstration of character.”Source Goal"

This might be the last season for the Barcelona veteran and it seems like he is willing to work with Ronald Koeman to show some leadership on the pitch. Messi has adapted well to the new position that he has been given and it seems as if his leadership and relentless efforts have seen Barcelona get some results even through their tough times.
