The 17-year-old is not new to the first team’s environment, having trained with them before on numerous occasions . The club has been undergoing a revamp in a bid to replace the old legs in the squad with new ones. The vulnerabilities and weaknesses of an ageing Barcelona squad were on full display in their 8-2 drubbing at the hands of Bayern Munich. The squad has slowed down and it is time to hand it over to the new generation.
Jordi Alba has been at the position of left-back and he has done well. However, the idea behind the rumoured promotion is to have a suitable backup for Alba, keeping him as the first-choice. It is believed that the Blaugrana would have like Jose Gaya as the solution to their defensive crises but the current financial situation of the club doesn’t permit them to make a move for him; they are forced to consider other options. However, it can be viewed as a blessing in disguise as it is the perfect opportunity to groom and nurture talent within the Barcelona ranks.
The signing of Memphis Depay is a much-needed one as it would give an attacking boost to the squad, easing the load off Messi’s shoulders. The latter has looked like he’s close to an ultimate club departure at the end of this season and the only way to keep him in the squad is if he his given an assurance that there is someone apart from him who can do the goal-scoring on a regular basis. Luis Suarez in his prime was the perfect partner for Messi as they equally shared the goal-scoring duties.
Depay has taken his fitness to a new level in the past year and a half and has totally looked like a different player. Moreover, Ronald Koeman knows how to use him best and the striker has already revealed that he’d love to play with Frenkie de Jong. In short, a Dutch reunion is what the Blaugrana needs at the moment.
Barcelona have got a lot to consider as the squad still has quality but is less on confidence. Moreover, the drama at the end of the summer window didn’t help their cause either and it’s on the players to help rebuild the image of the club. With the Presidential elections coming up, will Barcelona regain its former glory?
