Lionel Messi has made up his mind about his future at the Camp Nou and it is not good news for the fans.

More from FC Barcelona News

Towards the end of the summer window, Messi broke the internet when he expressed his desire to leave Barcelona. This was soon after the 8-2 mauling handed down by the German giants, Bayern Munich.

That loss ended the Blaugrana’s Champions League campaign and highlighted many of the problems going on at the club for many years. As per Todofichajes, Messi has decided on his future and it is irreversible. He wants to leave at the end of this season.

Since 2015, Barcelona haven’t managed to reach the finals of the Champions League and came perilously close to it on two occasions before suffering humiliating losses against Roma, Liverpool, and Bayern. Against Roma and Liverpool, Barca threw away a three-goal lead in the second leg fixtures.

Last season can be considered as the decisive factor which drove the Argentine ace into making this decision. Before the start of lockdown, Barcelona were doing absolutely fine and were looking all set to win the La Liga. However, post the resumption of the league, they threw away the lead and gifted the title to their arch-rivals in Real Madrid. A humiliation at the hands of Bayern, later on, saw them go down 8-2 and that probably sealed the fate of the club.

Recently, the club’s interim president made a shocking statement in which he claimed that the Catalans would be in a better place in terms of finances if they had sold Messi. Though he received a lot of flak for it, that statement was totally invalid in such a situation.

Only two clubs can afford Messi’s salary and they are Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain. Both the clubs are happy to receive Messi but the 33-year-old, though he may want a reunion with his former teammate in Neymar, he is more interested in being a part of a winning project. Having said that, he might just be tempted to join his former boss in Pep Guardiola at the Etihad stadium. Based on that assumption, it is fair to say that the former Premier League champions will look to secure the Argentine’s signature in the coming winter window.

For every Barcelona fan, the ultimate desire would be to see their best player retire at Camp Nou. However, Messi has been the player that has basically carried the club in the last three or four years and he does deserve to bow out on a winning note. Barcelona is a world-class team but aren’t the dominant force that they used to be three years back. The club is undergoing a period of transition at the moment and it is understandable why Messi wants to leave.
