Barcelona boss is undeterred by rough start and ready to be patient.
It has been a rather rough start to life at Barcelona for Ronald Koeman. He inherited a team that was falling apart, a board whose management drove the club to a huge 448 million euros debt, and a captain who wanted to leave. It is safe to say things are not ideal at the club at this moment. The financial mess which has been created over the years has also hampered Koeman’s reign as manager as no more transfers can be done this season.

Although Barcelona are sitting in 8th position with only 5 wins, Koeman is prepared to be patient for the transfers to finally start coming in. At the moment, Barcelona are being run by an interim board that does not have the power to buy or sell any player. To make things further convoluted, the Presidential election is on 24th January. Only after a new president is appointed, can the club go back into the transfer business.
The new President then must also prioritize sorting out the balance books and finances and not recklessly start spending. The matter of Lionel Messi’s contract also needs attention as losing him for free would be a huge loss for the club. Thus, Koeman must wait until everything is fixed before he can get his transfers completed.
The Dutchman has already shown that he can be patient as his requests of Eric Garcia, Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum were all left incomplete due to financial reasons. He is prepared to wait till the end of the season to get a few free agents and hopefully complete some other signings as well.
He has been very patient with Barcelona and thus, it is only fair that the club is patient with him as well. Although the season has not started well, they must give him and the players time to see significant results.
Who will be Koeman’s next signing?
