Messi does more than just play football, he also helps his nation, especially the underprivileged, reach further in life. The ‘Champions of the Peace of the Year’ award, shows us just how much the player works outside his profession.

The Champions of the Peace of the Year award is given out by the “Peace and Sport” organization taking into account the player’s work towards peace in the sport. Players who work for a positive change around the sport and in other aspects of social life and society are the ones who are nominated and one player is chosen to receive the award.

Messi won the award this year due to the amazing work that his “Leo Messi” foundation has been doing since its inception in 2007. The Argentine star, via this organization, has helped the promotion of education and inclusion of less privileged children or disadvantaged children around the world.

Didier Drogba, vice-president of Peace and Sport, commented on the winner,

"“Lionel Messi always demonstrates to be a great role model for fair play, setting the example for the younger generation of players and for millions of children and fans all around the world.”Source ESPN"

Messi himself is very happy about the award as it helps to raise more awareness to the issues that he is trying to solve. He gave a speech after receiving the award,

"“It is an honor to receive the ‘Champion for Peace of the Year’ award. Respect towards the others is something I learned when I was a kid, and I always try to apply this important value on the football pitch. It is a pleasure to be recognised for being a fair player. I thank Peace and Sport and H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco for this award and I look forward to continuing inspiring and supporting disadvantaged people.”Source ESPN"

The Barcelona captain has always tried to help out the less fortunate and even during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the economy was very unstable in Spain, he donated a million euros to help Spain and his motherland, Argentina.
