Lionel Messi expresses desire to win the La Liga
Barcelona legend, Lionel Messi, bags yet another individual award. Last night he was honored with the Pichichi trophy which is given by the Marca Newspaper to the top scorer in La Liga. The Argentine secured the trophy for a record seventh time, beating out the legendary, Telmo Zarra’s record of six trophies.

This is yet another achievement for the Argentine. The forward used to have great battles with his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, when he was in the La Liga. However, after his departure to Serie A, Messi has had less competition and won the title both times since.
The 33-year-old’s 33 goals in the 2019-20 season were enough for him to win the prestigious award even though they surrendered the League title to rivals, Real Madrid. This just goes on to show that a single man cannot win the league even if he is the greatest player of the modern generation.
When asked by Marca, about a possible eighth Pichichi award, Messi dismissed the thought and said that he would rather win the La Liga than any more individual awards.
"“An eighth Pichichi? I don’t know, nor am I thinking about it, it is not something I am worried or obsessed about, I would prefer to win La Liga before getting the Pichichi, we are fighting towards that.”Source Goal"
The Argentine then talked about the disappointing start to the season and said that they did not deserve to lose a lot of those games. He is, however, optimistic about the future and is hopeful that the Catalans can get back into the title race. It will be hard but not impossible.
He also shed some more insight upon the celebration against Osasuna. He said that his tribute to Maradona was planned and he is grateful that he got to score that day and dedicate the goal to the legend, Diego Maradona.
"“Scoring that day is a nice memory and it was a very special day because of all the significance of Diego no longer being with us.”"
Barcelona however, will need to pull up their socks if they are going to be catching up to the league leaders. The players and Ronald Koeman must make his philosophy work. They are currently eight points behind the league leaders and they must not fall down any further if they want a chance at the League title this season.
