Lionel Messi’s 644th Barcelona goal breaks Pele’s record.

Lionel Messi has finally done it. Last night against Real Valladolid, Messi scored his 644th goal for Barcelona to break Pele’s legendary record of most number of goals scored for one club.

This is a moment in footballing history and another reminder to critics that the Argentine has still got it and he is still looking to win trophies and break records.

This was honestly coming for a while, everyone knew that it was going to eventually happen but Messi made sure he did so in style. Not only did he score a fantastic goal, but he also provided an assist in the match which helped his team secure a 3-0 win over the side currently in the relegation zone.

The club captain knew that he could create history with the goal but he did not play selfishly as his team needed a win after two consecutive draws.

After the match, the 33-year-old expressed his joy and gratitude on an Instagram post, which read,

"“When I started playing football I never thought I’d break any record, especially not the one I achieved today that Pele held,”“I can only give my thanks to everyone who helped me during these years, my team-mates, my family, my friends, and everyone who supports me every day.”Source Goal"

Messi has once again proved to the world that he is in fact the greatest modern player in the game. His rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo is legendary but the Portuguese man just cannot achieve the amounts Messi has. Another record in the bag for the Argentine and this time taking it away from another one of the best footballers to have ever graced the footballing world, Pele.

The record also shows the forward’s loyalty to the club which Pele recognized earlier this week. Messi has been with the club since the age of 13, this in the modern-day and age is unheard of. The player and club’s story did take a dent in the summer however when Messi filed for an official transfer request.

That saga is not quite over. The Barcelona man could find himself in a different club next season if the new President is unable to come up with a good plan for the future. It will be a terrible loss for the club if they lose their most valuable asset and they must try their best to persuade the star into extending his contract.
