Barcelona face competition from PSG to acquire Memphis Depay.

January is almost here which means that the transfer window will be open once again. Teams all over the world will start business once again and though it may be a bit slow due to the pandemic, for a few teams this window could be a life savior. Barcelona are one of the teams that did not have a very good summer transfer window and will be hoping to nab a few players in January after the elections.

Their plan is to snap up Dutch winger, Memphis Depay, who will be played in the number nine position. They currently only have Martin Braithwaite as a number nine but Ronald Koeman believes that the Danish player is not up to the mark.

Koeman had put Memphis Depay on his wishlist as soon as he got elected but due to financial reasons, the club could not afford the 26-year-old. Now that Lyon has reduced his price down to five million euros, he is much more affordable but they have another bidder as well.

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly wants the player as well. They need a secondary striker and winger and Depay perfectly fits their requirements. After the price drop, the French giants reignited their interest in the player, and their sporting director, Leonardo Araujo, is looking into making this deal happen in January.

Ideally, the Catalans would want to wait till July to grab Depay for free but with added pressure from the French giants, they might have to shell out some money to complete this deal in January. This will be a big decision for the Dutchman to make as well. Both the teams are a very big upgrade and will be expecting a lot from the player. While playing for Barcelona under Koeman would be a dream come true for Depay, PSG could provide a more lucrative offer and there would be no change in the country.

Barcelona also cannot make any transfers before the 24th of January, their election date. The current interim board does not have the power to buy or sell any players, thus they must wait. Should the French Champions buy Depay before that, it would be a big loss for the Catalans who desperately need a new number nine.

It has been a rather difficult time for the Spanish giants and they do not need another setback. Thus, hopefully, things will finally go their way after the election of the new president and the new board of directors.
