Ronald Koeman admits difficult journey ahead for Barcelona.

Another match and another disappointment for Ronald Koeman and his boys. This time it was against the bottom half team, Eibar. The Catalans dominated possession yet again and they made more shots on target but it only takes one mistake and the opponents will capitalize. Koeman’s Barcelona played out a draw, dropping two points and now the coach has admitted that it will be quite tough for them to win the La Liga.

Barcelona surrendered the league trophy to arch-rivals Real Madrid last season and it would be a very tough task to regain it with their current squad. No one expected the Spanish giants to be miraculously back on their feet but their season has been below expectations. After 15 games in the league, they are sitting in sixth position, seven points below league leaders, Atletico Madrid. The Madrid side also has two games in hand and thus could extend their lead even further.

After dropping two more points on Tuesday against Eibar, Koeman gave a truthful post-match interview, where he told reporters that Barcelona have a very slim chance of winning. The title cannot be won if the team does not believe it but the current Barcelona side must face the reality that they are just not good enough yet to challenge for the title.

Koeman talked about their title chances on the interview,

"“I am realistic, it will be very difficult to be champions, Nothing is impossible, but you have to acknowledge the gap. Atletico look very good to me, very strong, they don’t concede many goals.”Source Goal"

The manager continued to talk about the game, saying that his team deserved to win but could not due to the lack of ruthlessness. In tight games like this, one must take all their chances and Barcelona missed a few. Martin Braithwaite could have put the boys in red and blue in front with a penalty but he completely missed the goal instead.

Koeman talked about that missed penalty, stating that if the striker had scored that, the team would have gotten a confidence boost. However, after missing chance after chance, the team was demoralized and could not get the win that they deserved.

"“We deserved to win, we did what was needed. [Eibar] only had one shot on goal. We created chances, but we didn’t score the penalty and then a defensive error… we played well, we worked hard and did enough to win, but this is happening to us far too often.”"

While the Catalans have recovered a bit from their horrendous start, they cannot afford to lose points like this if they want to challenge for the title. Atletico could go 13 points clear off of Barcelona and that would most definitely kick them out of the title race. Koeman needs to get a few transfers done and rethink his plans to make sure that they can win at least one trophy otherwise, his job may be under a lot of pressure.
