The 33-year-old centre-back has been an integral part of Barcelona’s defense for years. Be it good or bad, he was one of the players who was always a part of the team as no other player could provide the Catalans the same security. When he was injured in November, Ronald Koeman feared the loss of his main centre-back as it was sure that he would not return by the end of the season.
Barcelona’s head doctor, Dr. Ramon Cugat recommended surgery for the degree of the injury, however, Gerard Pique was against surgery as it could have finished his career. The player decided to go for a more conservative treatment method and the club agreed with his decision. His recovery has been above satisfactory and he is able to go to the gym and run in two months.
He needs one more month of recovery after which he will be assessed again by Koeman to see if he is ready to play or not but the Dutch manager is not willing to rush him in. Youngsters such as Ronald Araujo and Oscar Mingueza have strived in the absence of the veteran center-back and thus Koeman does not have to rush Pique back into action.
