With the Barcelona presidential election upcoming on the 7th of March, candidates are starting to strengthen up their campaigns by showing the fans their plans to resolve the club’s financial and on-field problems. Joan Laporta in particular has been very vocal about being able to bring in some new reinforcements to the club. However, Candidate Victor Font says that it is irresponsible of Joan Laporta to make such promises as they will most likely go unfulfilled.

The reason why Laporta is getting so much news coverage is because the candidate promised Barcelona fans that he would try to get players such as Erling Haaland. The Borussia Dortmund player has been a sensation ever since his arrival at the big stages. His run with RB Salzburg got the attention of many big clubs such as Manchester United but he decided to go to the German side.

Now a lot of clubs are trying to trigger his release clause worth 75 million euros. Although the Catalans are in no position to be spending such an amount of money, the former president, still went ahead and said that he had all the cards available to play for a big-money transfer. Now Font has decided to fire back by saying that these promises are dangerous and misleading.

In a press conference Font said,

"“A few weeks ago the same candidate didn’t want to sign Eric Garcia in the January transfer window because there’s no money at the club.”“generating expectations about one of the stars that shone in the Champions League this week is irresponsible because it’s not possible to sign him.”Source Sport"

Font further went on to say that Laporta had disrespected the Barca Socios by not attending the presidential debate organized by the club’s television channel. That might be debatable in itself but what is not debatable is the club’s financial situation.

With the Catalans currently in a debt of over a billion euros, it is unimaginable that they can sign the likes of the Norwegian superstar. They should be selling players instead of buying more and thus the comment from Laporta does seem untimely and misleading.

Is Joan Laporta wrong when making claims of big-name signing?
