Pique scored in the dying minutes of the match to force the game to go to extra time. It was during this time where he fell to the ground, in pain, after giving a back pass.
Nevertheless, he finished the game but it was clear that he was still experiencing some discomfort.
In his post-match press conference, manager Ronald Koeman said they would have to wait and see the extent of the injury and if it meant he would miss some time.
The club released a statement stating that Pique “strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.”
Barca did not reveal the estimated time off, only that his recovery will determine his availability, which seems to be standard procedure.
The good news is the injury does not appear to be a relapse and at first, it was believed to be nothing but a scare and may only miss the upcoming match against Osasuna.
But according to Diario AS, the Catalan center-back is expected to miss three weeks, which means he will not be available for the Champions League second leg against PSG.
It is a definite blow for Barcelona as they hoped to have him available as they attempt another comeback. With Ronald Araujo missing the Sevilla game and no timetable for his return, they don’t have many options at center-back.
Pique came back quicker than expected to play the first leg and despite trying to manage his minutes, he still picked up another injury. Even at his age, as demonstrated against Sevilla, he is still an important player on the pitch and will be a significant miss for the next three weeks.
