Messi had issued a notice last summer to exit from Barca but had to stay due to contractual complications. Ever since then, his future at Camp Nou has been under scrutiny. With big clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City linked to the maestro, fans are skeptical about the 33-year-old’s stay with the Blaugranes.
The 33-year-old could perhaps be persuaded to stay on, now that new President Joan Laporta has been elected. Laporta’s election will surely open up doors for new signings and planning for the future which will hopefully include the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner.
What Jordi Cruyff has said about Lionel Messi
Cruyff remains optimistic about Messi for the time being and refuses to speculate further. In an interview with Cadena Ser, he said:
"“I don’t know. I think there is only one person who can answer it, who is the person involved. The fact that he was pictured at Camp Nou with his son [casting his vote for the presidency], the way he celebrated the comeback against Sevilla … that comes from within. It is speculating more than anything else because only he has the answer.”Source: Goal"
While fans can only hope the magician will remain with the Catalans, he has not made any decisions yet. He just wants to focus on the season and play great football and despite being open to speaking to clubs since January, no meetings have been set. Obviously, whatever Messi decides will be a huge decision, and as arguably the best player in the world, he won’t be making any rash calls.
After bagging a place in the Copa Del Rey finals, perhaps sealing a miraculous victory against PSG will tip the scales in favor of the Captain remaining at Barca.
