Barcelona is going into the summer transfer window with an interesting right-back conundrum. The question is not about the first choice right back as Sergino Dest has done enough in his debut season to stake his claim, the question is who remains his deputy – Sergi Roberto or Emerson?

Roberto was drafted into this role by Luis Enrique as a temporary option but the La Masia product has arguably given the best returns in comparison to his competitors in this position over the last few years. His contract runs down in summer 2022 and this summer could be decisive for his future.

Emerson, who Barcelona co-own with Real Betis, could also have an exciting future at Camp Nou. The Brazilian is on loan until 2021 at Benito Villamarin Stadium and Barcelona have an option to purchase him for 9 million euros.

As per Goal, the Blaugrana are preparing to have the 22-year-old in their squad next season. The report further mentions that if an offer of 25 million euros is presented, Barca may be willing to consider offers.

Arsenal eyeing Barcelona right-back Emerson

However, there are several clubs that admire Emerson’s talent and would fancy signing him in the summer. PSG have clearly shown interest in the 22-year-old and have made contacts with the concerned parties. The French giants are yet to table an offer for the former Atletico Mineiro full-back.

It appears PSG are not the only interested club as Premier League side Arsenal is also eyeing Emerson. According to The Sun, Mikel Arteta’s side is closely following Emerson as they prepare for life after Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard is likely to depart from Emirates this summer.

The board will have to make a decision on Emerson’s future and in turn decide whether to renew Roberto or cash in on him this summer to avoid losing him on a free transfer. Another possibility is that Roberto is moved into the midfield as a utility player and Barca keep Dest and Emerson as two right-backs competing for the starting role but the USMNT star’s progress within a few months will definitely give him an edge.
