The new board are studying the contracts of several first-team players as they look to move on from those considered unimportant in order to trim the wage bill. However, the Barcelona board are also looking at situations where an improvement on terms could be warranted. One such situation involved Pedri.
According to Sport, the Catalans want to tie the player down and are considering offering Pedri an extension with increased pay. He signed a four-year deal when he joined from Las Palmas this season.
The report claims that Barcelona want to extend his contract another four or five years while maintaining the €400 million release clause. They believe his performances this season warrant an improved deal.
What perhaps neither side took into account heading into this season is how quickly he would become an important player for Ronald Koeman.
Barcelona are more than pleased with Pedri’s performances this season.
Before the start of the season, no one could have predicted he would become an undisputed starter.
The plan at the start of the season was that they would likely ease him into the team with a few league starts here and there and use the Copa del Rey as the competition where he would play most.

The injury to Philippe Coutinho played to his favour and it would not be long before Pedri completely leaped over the Brazilian in the depth chart. Maybe the biggest factor has to do with his understanding with Lionel Messi. Pedri stepped up when the team was struggling to combine well with the Argentinian on the pitch.
His rapid climb onto the main stage also resulted in a call-up to Spain where he’s already featured in their World Cup qualifiers.
Pedri is happy at Barcelona and the club want to ensure they keep him at the club for as long as they can. It’s why his renewal, alongside Ousmane Dembélé, are considered top priorities for Joan Laporta and his board.
Is Pedri Barcelona’s most exciting youngster this season?
