Garcia was part of La Masia before he left and the former academy player was close to coming back prior to the start of the season. Since a deal with Manchester City could not be reached, Barcelona believed it would be more prudent to wait until the summer when Garcia would be a free agent.
A deal was thought to be in place with the previous Barcelona board.
However, the deal, long thought to be in place, has hit a bit of a snag after the new board, under Joan Laporta, revised the terms of the original agreement. The new offer includes a lower wage than the original.
From the outside looking in, it would come as no surprise if Garcia rejected the offer and decided to sign somewhere else. To him, it might reflect that Barcelona are not as serious about signing him as he previously thought.
According to Mundo Deportivo, that is not the case. The Catalan giants are still interested in Garcia but they need to meet certain financial requirements set by LaLiga and that is why they had to revise their offer.
From the player’s side, because he denied extending his stay with Manchester City and did not entertain offers from other clubs, he believes the terms of the original deal should be respected.
Fortunately for the club, their latest proposal is not seen as a dealbreaker or that Garcia won’t end up signing for them.
Garcia, 20, is seen as a signing for the future. Given his performances at City and with the Spanish national team, his stock is rising. Barcelona believe he can be part of their backline for years to come. In essence, he can be their new Gerard Pique.
The two sides have met and there does seem to be an understanding of the situation. But they still have to hammer out some final details which will likely come down to his potential wages.
