Barcelona have not had a great season so far and a lot of that can be blamed on the injury and financial issues that the club have been facing. While the financial problems are largely to be blamed on the ongoing pandemic and certain decisions made by the former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, the injury problems are nobody’s fault. The likes of Ansu Fati, Gerard Pique, Philippe Coutinho, Samuel Umtiti and many other players missed several months due to injuries.

Having said that, the current squad have tremendous talent and should have been able to clinch the La Liga title this season but failed to perform on the days that it mattered the most. While Ronald Koeman did manage to take his side from mid-table at the start of the season to just two points behind Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, the lastest draw against Levante has realistically kicked Barca out of the title race.

While multiple aspects from the coaching staff to the individual players’ performances can be blamed, one thing is clear that president Joan Laporta will have to make many changes to the current squad. Barca have some major defensive problems this year, whether it be injuries or ageing defenders they will need to bring in at least one major centre-back in the summer in order to compete for Europe.

While Ronald Araujo can be hailed as a solid defender for the future, Barca will need a solid player to partner him on the backline. Here are six centre-back options for Barcelona to sign in the summer to strengthen the squad.
