Barcelona target Memphis Depay provides future update

Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a striker this summer with constant whispers of Memphis Depay possibly making a move to Camp Nou. The Dutchman has seen out his contract at Olympique Lyon and is a free agent, on the hunt for a new club, a new challenge.

Barcelona’s admiration for Depay can be broken down into two reasons: Ronald Koeman and free transfer. Current boss Koeman is a huge admirer of the 27-year-old and has dreamt of signing him ever since he took over the reins at Barcelona last summer. A deal couldn’t be agreed upon due to Barca’s fragile financial structure last summer but a transfer is possible as Depay is now a free agent.

The change of President and club board doesn’t solve the club’s compromised financial state. The Blaugrana are still a long way from replenishing the club’s treasury but the need to upgrade the squad reigns supreme. In such circumstances, Bosman transfers could be the smartest options. After years and years of exorbitant opulence in the transfer market, the club will have to target free agents and show trust in the youth.

However, Koeman isn’t guaranteed a seat in the dugout next season as President Joan Laporta carefully scrutinizes the season’s performances before making a call over the Dutchman’s future. Should Koeman be relieved of his duties, Barca may shift their attention away from Depay.

Despite being linked to the Spaniards all season, Depay’s future remains uncertain. The 27-year-old played his last game in a Lyon shirt against OGC Nice but couldn’t avoid defeat. The former Manchester United forward also addressed his future after the game.

The report further stated that Depay was also looking for a house in Barcelona and had also accepted the economic proposal offered by the club. However, the talk of a Koeman departure has cooled down the possibility of the 27-year-old landing in Catalonia.

Juventus and PSG remain linked to the forward. The Old Lady are looking for a striker as they make a final decision on Alvaro Morata while also keeping a track of Arkadiusz Milik and Depay. Meanwhile, PSG wants to sell Mauro Icardi who has had a bittersweet two-year spell in Paris.

At one stage, Barcelona were destined to land Depay but from the striker’s statements and several factors that have unfolded in recent weeks, Depay’s future remains up in the air.
