Barcelona fans were entertained with the news headlines of a possible player exchange between the Catalan club and rivals Atletico Madrid. The idea was a proposed swap deal that would see Joao Felix come to Barca and Antoine Griezmann move in the opposite direction.
Considering Barcelona’s humongous debt and the financial turmoil that has unfolded recently, swap deals and free transfers make sense rather than splashing millions of euros in transfers. In fact, swap deals and Bosman transfers can be considered smart play by the club as it minimizes the risk of loss and embarrassment.

Griezmann arrived from Atletico Madrid in 2019 for 120 million euros but has not yet hit the peak that the Blaugrana would’ve expected. After an underwhelming debut season, the Frenchman has improved this term but doubts remain over his future at the club. There have also been whispers that Griezmann could return to his former club where he excelled and felt at ease.
Atletico Madrid signed Felix from Benfica for 113 million euros and was regarded as a top forward for the future. However, the Portuguese has taken time to settle at the club. The Catalans have been interested in Los Rojiblancos’ Felix which prompted the talks of a possible swap deal.
Atletico Madrid president denies Antoine Griezmann – Joao Felix swap with Barcelona
Now, Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has addressed the rumours of the possible swap deal between his club and Barcelona. When questioned about a possible Griezmann-Felix swap deal, Cerezo replied:
"“I think you journalists talk too much. There are things that are said that do not make sense or make sense.” (via Le10 Sport)"
The candid and direct statement from the Atleti President makes it pretty clear that all the talk of a swap deal is just a product of the rumour mill. However, the future of Griezmann still remains unsettled. Even though he was a crucial part of the team this term, Barca’s desire to sign Erling Haaland could pave the way to Griezmann’s exit.
