Reports from tier-one journalist Fabrizio Romano state that the Catalans are also close to signing Olympic Lyon’s Memphis Depay. These same reports claimed that the Catalans were also close to signing Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum but reportedly the player will receive double the wages at Paris Saint-Germain and thus has chosen the French club.
Barcelona keen on making a statement signing
Now, according to reports from SPORT, Joan Laporta wants two big and marquee signings in the summer in order to make a statement. These reports claim that the club are interested in signing either Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland or Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
It will definitely not be easy for the La Liga giants to just simply make a big signing as they have next to no funds without sales. Their first few signings of this current transfer window have been all free transfers with Emerson being the only one that cost them 9 million euros. Big players need to be sold in order to raise funds and gather the money required for signing Haaland or Martinez.
While the Catalans now do have Aguero and will probably have Memphis in a few weeks too, goal-scoring will not be an issue. However, everyone at the club would prefer a younger forward, one which is a safe and secure option for the long run. Signing Haaland will take care of the present and the future. However, the German club will not sell easily hence it would be financially easier to pursue Lautaro Martinez instead. Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola has a positive relationship with Joan Laporta but the agent is known to demand hefty fees to make the transfer happen.
Erling Haaland and Lautaro Martinez would be fantastic choices for Barcelona at this point. These forwards are young and lethal and they will be put in service for a good amount of time that will benefit both parties. The Catalans should be quick to snap such players up given they’ve got the opportunity.
