Barcelona suffered a setback in their summer transfer strategy after Georginio Wijanldum dropped the idea of joining Barca at the last moment, instead, signing for PSG for a better financial package. Now, Wijnaldum’s compatriot, Memphis Depay, may also face a similar quandary.

In today’s age of exorbitant spending, Bosman transfers are rare and those transfers working out for the team is even rarer. Free transfers are frugal, low-risk solutions with the club only having to pay sign-on fees and salaries. Now, these expenditures are not small but compared to the potentially hefty transfer fee that could’ve gone to the previous club, free transfers are the best workable solutions.

So, whenever a free agent is available in the market, clubs swarm around the player and offer him the best proposal possible to acquire his signature. Generally, Barcelona is not a club that indulges a lot in free transfers but keeping the fragile financial condition in mind, free transfers were the smartest solution to upgrade the squad.

Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia have already signed for Barcelona on a free transfer. Dutch pairing of Wijnaldum and Depay were also to follow the former Manchester City duo to Barcelona. The deal for Wijnaldum was very close too, with Barca also planning medicals in the Netherlands until PSG sprung up in the last moments to hijack the deal. The French giants offered a hefty salary compared to what the Blaugrana were offering and the Liverpool man agreed to join Les Rouge et Bleu.

Juventus offer better salary package to Memphis Depay than Barcelona

Now, the Depay deal could also head to a similar road. Barcelona for weeks have been negotiating with Depay and the club is ready to offer a three-year contract to the 27-year-old. With Ronald Koeman set to continue as the Barca manager, the Depay deal looked imminent with the Catalans confident of the free transfer.

The Lyon striker always had admirers in Juventus and PSG. Now, as per Mundo Deportivo, Juve still holds interest in the Dutchman and Juve have improved their offer, raising the salary by 3 million euros in comparison to Barcelona’s offer and also offering a four-year deal compared to Barca’s three.

The Blaugrana want to avoid another Wijnaldum-esque deal collapse and have taken steps to amend their proposal. Barca is now willing to offer a three-year deal with an option for another additional year. However, the club doesn’t want to go on a bidding war and raise the salary package, especially when the board is trying to massively trim the oversized wage bill.

Barcelona are not only offering more economical proposals to the new arrivals but also hoping to reduce the wages of the current stars at the club to contain the financial damages. The UEFA EURO 2020 is also seen as a hurdle in some transfers as players want to slow down negotiations and hope they perform well in the International tournament which helps their agents to paint a better picture of them and attract better offers.

Depay deal is currently not closed yet but Barcelona will be hoping to get the deal done before Bianconeri further improve their offer or Depay changes his mind.
