Since Joan Laporta won the 2021 Barcelona elections, the new president has vowed that he would be bringing in new players to the club in order to strengthen the squad. To some extent, he has lived up to his promises; however, he is yet to make the big money transfer that he has been boasting about since campaigning. Laporta promised to bring in a big-money player but fans were skeptical as to how the club was going to finance this move. Now, there has been some new developments that could bring in a lot of funds for the club to make the big transfer they were dreaming of.

Laporta has been bragging that he has the ability to bring Borussia Dortmund superstar, Erling Haaland, to the club. He even had a meeting with the striker and his agent, Mino Raiola, which led fans to believe that the transfer might go through, despite all the odds. Still, the question remained, where exactly would the money come from to sponsor such a big deal. Rumors suggested that Laporta was negotiating for a huge sponsorship that would help them get their desired players. Other rumors suggested that Laporta would take some money from the loan they are getting from Goldman Sachs for the new stadium.
While these rumors are all possible, a new rumor has surfaced which seems much more likely. The Catalans in order to comply with the league’s budget would have to sell some top players regardless of the transfers they made. Thus it is not surprising that players like Antoine Griezmann, Philippe Coutinho, Ousmane Dembele, and Samuel Umtiti could all be in danger of losing their place at Barcelona. Players like Griezmann and Coutinho could potentially sell for a lot of money and luckily for the Catalans, Manchester City have made the Frenchman a potential target.
Manchester City eye Antoine Griezmann if Harry Kane plan fails
According to reports from the Fijaches, the Light Blues are preparing to make a big bid for Tottenham Hotspur superstar, Harry Kane. However, Daniel Levy, the Spur’s owner, has made it clear that he does not want to sell the talented striker and in order for the Citizens to acquire him, they will have to break the Premier League transfer record. Pep Guardiola’s side is not ready to pay that much and are looking for other alternatives should Levy remain adamant about Kane’s price tag. Griezmann happens to be one of the alternatives that Pep is looking into, as the manager is a big admirer of the player.
This is a huge opportunity for Laporta to extract some money out of one of the richest clubs in Europe however, he must realize that the club will probably not break even on Griezmann’s transfer. The player could go for anywhere from between 60 million euros to 90 million euros. This would mean a huge boost for Barcelona financially as they are in huge debt. Squad-wise, it won’t be a big loss for them as they have just acquired Memphis Depay and the Dutchman will most likely start over the World Cup winner anyway. It seems like a fair deal for the Catalans however, it all depends on whether Manchester City can acquire Kane or not, because if they do acquire the English star, they will no longer require Griezmann.
