Even though the Catalans are not doing so well financially, and they are yet to register all of their new signings, Barcelona are not afraid to link themselves with new players. Everyone thought this would be a more reserved transfer market for Barca, given their financial situation, however, Joan Laporta had different ideas, and this is one of the most aggressive transfer sessions for Barcelona in recent years. Now, they have linked themselves with yet another player, a player who used to play for Bayern Munich, and he is none other than Renato Sanches.

More from Everything Barca

23-year-old Renato Sanches is, and will probably forever be known for his famous run in the Euros 2016 where he scored one goal and was awarded the Young Player of the Tournament. He was the youngest Portuguese player to have played in an international tournament, and also the youngest player ever to win the Euros.

This was a huge achievement, and on top of that, he had a brilliant season with Benfica as well. All of this made Bayern sign him for a decent fee of 35 million euros. This move did not work out, however, and after a failed loan deal to Swansea, he was sold to Lille in 2019.

Sanches went on to win the Ligue 1 with his new team, beating the favorites, Paris Saint-Germain, and shocking the footballing world to its core. He was not really involved in the victory however, as he played only 29 games due to his multiple injuries. His form was good in the matches that he did play, and he got a call up for the 2021 Euros, where he played four games.

Barcelona cannot afford to sign Renato Sanches

Sanches’ career seemed over at Bayern but he managed to find his form in the French league, and now Barcelona are interested in the player, as they failed to sign their first preference, Gini Wijnaldum. Sanches seems an impossible bet for the Catalans as the French Champions are hoping to get at least 70 million euros for the player. This is an absurd number for the player, and they also have competition for other clubs. Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in the player, and they can easily outbid Barca at this stage. Thus, although it seemed like an interesting transfer, it is one that will never happen unless Lille asks for a reasonable price.
