The season is set to start in a matter of days and Barcelona remain a financial mess with the uncertainty of whether or not they can register their new signings.

The departure of Lionel Messi was blamed in part on LaLiga’s salary limit and the untenable position the club finds itself in. Even with Messi off the books, the Catalans still need to trim their wage bill.

The possibility of Memphis Depay, EmersonSergio Agüero and Eric Garcia going unregistered is very real unless the board convinces a number of players to reduce their wages or offload some of them.

Joan Laporta has spent the entirety of the offseason working on both Messi’s renewal and trimming the squad. He’s already failed on the former and is struggling to make any progress on the latter.

In a situation, as delicate as this, it is not good optics that the president has gone on holiday.

There have been rumors on possible player exits. Miralem Pjanic has continually been linked with a move back to Juventus, Samuel Umtiti has been linked with a loan move and Martin Braithwaite has been linked with a move to the Premier League.

But rumors is all they’ve been. The complete incompetence of the previous board shoulders most of the blame but the new board has done a sufficient enough job of righting the ship. The only move of not they’ve made is selling Junior Firpo to Leeds United. Other than that, it’s been small transfers of Barça B players.

dark. Next. Barcelona to be without Sergio Aguero for 10 weeks

Barcelona has suffered the embarrassment of losing the best player in the world. Being unable to register their new signings by the time the first game rolls around would be pouring salt on an already deep wound.
