Barcelona avoid another embarrassing episode as they will be able to register Memphis Depay, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj in time for the season opener versus Real Sociedad.

They have Gerard Pique to thank for that.

New Barcelona signings to be available for the match against Real Sociedad

According to Mundo Deportivo, Pique reached an agreement to significantly lower his wages so the club can register the new signings.

“”FC Barcelona is able to register Memphis, Eric Garcia and Rey Manaj to play in the Spanish Liga de Futbol Profesional,” the club said in a statement. “This has been made possible thanks to an agreement with Gerard Pique whereby the Barça second captain’s salary has been substantially reduced.”

The Catalans also announced they are still on working on wage reductions with Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. As for Sergi Roberto, the player has said he is working on a renewal with the club where he is set to earn significantly less.

In addition to reducing his wages, Pique has also had his salary deferred until after 2025. It appears there was some maneuvering done which means the center-back will be paid after he’s done playing for the club.

The availability of Memphis and Garcia is a huge boost for manager Ronald Koeman. Being able to count on the Dutch forward is important as they are going to rely on him to try to ease some of the pain from losing Lionel Messi.

Unsurprisingly, the 34-year-old is getting a lot of praise from supporters and former teammates as well.

Barcelona escape one headache but signing more players is rather unlikely despite Koeman’s wishes.

The Catalans know they need to get off on the right foot or the pressure will mount. Fortunately, they’ll be at relatively full strength to do so.
