Patience is running dangerously thin at Barcelona with regards to the future of center-back Samuel Umtiti.

The club has been trying to offload him for the past few seasons but the 27-year-old has been adamant about his desire to stay and convince manager Ronald Koeman.

He’s been unable to do so and now the Catalans are prepared to take drastic measures in order to convince Umtiti to accept a move.

According to Sport, Barça is set to issue an ultimatum where either Umtiti accepts one of the offers made for him or else they see no other choice to terminate his contract — similar to what they did to Matheus Fernandes.

The report goes on to claim both sides had come to an agreement Umtiti would get a chance to convince Koeman during the preseason. Should he fail to do so, then he would accept a move.

The manager does not count on him and it was evident as he was one of the players left out of the LaLiga opener against Real Sociedad.

The club is now saying Umtiti went back on that “agreement” and are disappointed he hasn’t kept up his side of the deal. It would explain this new ultimatum in where Barcelona is threatening to let him go altogether.

This situation, should it come to Umtiti’s contract being terminated, is certain to get messy. The player could take them to court and in the end force Barcelona to pay him what he is owed as stated in the contract.

His position at the club is untenable. He is not going to feature much, if at all, and has been singled out the most as culpable for Lionel Messi’s exit. He was roundly booed and whistled in their final preseason game. It affected him so much he went straight to the locker room once the match was over.

Those jeers are likely to continue if he ever steps on the pitch at the Camp Nou. He’s one of the highest earners at the club and his wages are proving to be the main obstacle in an exit. The countdown is on as he has one week to make a decision before Barcelona take that decision out of his hands.
