There appears to be no love lost between manager Ronald Koeman and the Barcelona president, Joan Laporta.
The Dutchman gave an interview to the media in his native Netherlands where he was critical of Laporta about leaking certain information to the Catalan press.
Despite the criticism, he also admits the relationship between him and the president has improved. He is also aware he only has one year left on his current deal.
The Barcelona manager is managing on borrowed time
The “feud” seems to stem from Koeman not liking what Laporta said in an interview about the power, or influence, a manager has.
“My relationship with Laporta has improved, but last week something happened that I don’t think is right,” Koeman said to NOS. He was suggesting that the coach doesn’t have all the power. He spoke too much and was not wise on two occasions.”
This also comes on the heels of a report Barcelona were considering offering Koeman a contract extension. However, any such extension would come with conditions. One of those conditions revolved around Riqui Puig.
It is no secret Puig is someone Koeman does not count on. At the same time, the 22-year-old is someone the club banks on for the future.
The Barcelona manager also took some time to praise himself and the work he’s been doing.
"“I’m open to staying, I’m having a good time. Thanks to me, this club has a future,” Koeman said.Source Marca"
That line is not going to sit well with the current board. Laporta backed him for this season but only because there was no one they realistically thought could take over. There is also the fact they cannot afford to pay what they would owe him on the remainder of his deal.
One can argue it’s been La Masia who is responsible for the club’s future. Plenty of new talent has emerged recently to complement some of the young talents already in the first team. Playing the youth has largely been thrust upon Koeman rather than it being the first option for the Dutchman.
The not-so-subtle digs at Laporta are curious. Koeman perhaps realizes he will not be brought back next season, therefore he feels open to be candid. On the other hand, he may not be too worried about being sacked. It’s going to be a last resort given the club’s financial situation.
Aside from a few chunks last season, Barcelona has looked rather pedestrian with Koeman in charge. If this keeps up, Laporta may be persuaded to fire him.
The Champions League match against Bayern Munich is their first match coming off the international break. If the Catalans get embarrassed there, it might give the president a sporting decision to sack him rather than a personal one.
