The 2-2 draw against Osasuna truly shows how much of a change Barcelona really needs and although Xavi Hernandez is ready to work for it, there has to be a change in the player’s mentality as well and a little bit of luck is required as well. Losing match after match, drawing against easy opponents, all this adds up to collectively take a toll on the club and on the players. The players need to understand that Barcelona are better than this and they need to step up as a unit and take back their throne.
In the match against Osasuna, the youngsters played very well, especially the first goals set up by Gavi and finished by Nico Gonzalez. The second goal by Abde Ezzalzouli was also a superb finish, followed by a great counter-attacking move. However, on both occasions, the Catalans failed to hold on to the lead and what should have been an easy three-point game turned into a mess due to faulty defending. In the post-match interview, Xavi hailed the youngsters but also indicated that the team is in a bad spot, not skill-wise but mentally. He said,
"“We’re lucky with the contribution the youngsters are making. It was a great effort from the whole team, but it’s the youngsters making the difference — and that’s difficult to digest.”“We are in a negative spiral and we need to find a way to break it,”Source The Guardian"
The manager went on to say that while it was great to see the young talents stepping up and taking charge of the game, that cannot always be the case as the more experienced players must make an impact as well. With this draw, Barca are now eighth on the table but only five points behind the number four spot. Thus, it is not the end of the world just yet however, they must start their renovation process right now, as they might fall further behind and that could be a problem.
