The Catalans had a problem with underperforming attackers and injured wingers and thus Xavi Hernandez made sure that Torres was secured by the club. The Barcelona legend scouted Torres a long time ago and knew that he is the player who is going to make a difference. However, now they have to sort out the defense as well. The Blaugrana do have a number of centre-backs however, only one of them is truly reliable in these trying times. Thus, the Catalans are trying for a new centre-back and not just any centre-back but one of the best in the world, Matthijs de Ligt.

Right now Barca has the likes of Samuel Umtiti, Clement Lenglet, Ronald Araujo, Oscar Mingueza, Eric Garcia, and Gerard Pique. Anyone would think why do they need another CB when they already have so many big names. However, the truth of the matter is that Pique is too old to be reliable, Umtiti never recovered from his injury, Lenglet could never maintain a consistent form and both Mingueza and Garcia have been underperforming so far. Araujo is their one and only good CB, thus they need to buy another young but experienced defender to play alongside him.

Barcelona reignite their interest in the signing of Matthijs de Ligt

De Ligt would be a perfect fit into the Barca team and he would even have the opportunity to link up with his old teammate, Sergino Dest, and Frenkie de Jong. According to the reputed journalist, Gerard Romero, Barcelona is seriously thinking about going for the Juventus man next transfer window. However, for that to happen, the Catalans must offload Philippe Coutinho and Umtiti, as they are two of the highest earners on the team. However, even if they manage to sell both of those players, acquiring De Ligt will be a tough job since he is considered one of the main players at Juve and he also has a contract till 2024 with the club. It will be a tough one for the Catalans however if they manage to sign the player, there is no doubt that he will captain the backline of the team.
