Barcelona manager, Xavi Hernandez, needs a goal scorer, one who will score regularly in every other game. Memphis Depay was Ronald Koeman’s choice however, the Dutchman has failed to be consistent. Apart from the former Manchester United man, the club also brought in Manchester City star, Sergio Aguero. Aguero was supposed to be the backup striker however, his goal-scoring abilities meant that he had the potential to start over Depay as well. Things did not go according to plan and Aguero ended up having a cardiac complication which meant that he had to end his career sooner than expected. Thus, the hunt for a new player was on and Edinson Cavani was thought to be the main target. However, that plan seems to have changed and new reports suggest that the Catalans are more interested in bringing a new defender.

According to several reports since last week, Barcelona was apparently ready to bring in Cavani next season. This made sense as well since the club is looking to bring in free agents and Cavani’s contract expires at the end of the season. The Uruguayan player seemed like the perfect replacement for Aguero however, now it seems that a striker is not what Xavi wants right now. Xavi managed to get Ferran Torres and he will probably try to play a false nine formation and deploy either Torres or Depay as the false nine. Thus, it leaves room for another transfer for the Blaugrana.

Barcelona no longer keen on prioritizing the signing of Edinson Cavani

Mundo Deportivo reports that although the Catalans have the likes of Samuel Umtiti, Clement Lenglet, Eric Garcia, Gerard Pique, and Ronald Araujo in the squad, they are looking to bring in a new, more assertive centre-back. This does make sense since Umtiti and Lenglet are high earners but low performers and Garcia is underperforming as well. Pique is still a solid option however, his age prevents him from playing at his full potential and he has become injury prone as well. As to which centre back the Catalans will go for is currently unknown however, there were some reports linking Matthijs de Ligt to the Copa del Rey champions.
