When Barcelona announced the arrival of their evergreen legend, Xavi Hernandez, as their new manager, fans were delighted because they knew that this is a manager who is passionate about the club and understands what the club needs. Xavi is from an era when Barca was the most dominant club in the entire world. They were on a pedestal so high that no one even came close to their level however, with new management and new presidents, the club fell down from that level after a series of bad mistakes. Now Xavi is back to fix the club and the defense is where he wants to focus.

When the Spanish legend came into the club as their manager, he identified the attack as the weak side and it was quite obvious since Barca were dependent on Lionel Messi for most of their goals. After the Argentine left, their attacking prowess fell down by a lot and Xavi understood that he needed to bring in new attackers. After he succeeded in bringing in three new forwards, he changed his attention to the defense. It is being said that the manager is not happy with the current state of his defense and nor should he be.

Barcelona planning a major defensive overhaul

Players like Jordi Alba and Dani Alves are well past their prime and Barca need new permanent replacements for these players. Their centre-back situation is not very good either and it has been rumored that Clement Lenglet, Samuel Umtiiti and Oscar Mingueza will all be sold in the next transfer window. In their place, the club is looking to bring in the likes of Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, and Matthijs de Ligt. In the full-back positions, they have identified Cesar Azpilicueta, Nicolas Tagliafico and Jose Gaya as their main targets. Xavi has an aggressive plan to get Barca fighting for the UEFA Champions League as soon as possible however, for that to succeed, he will need the backing of the board and financial support.
