Barcelona has decided to keep this legend for another year
Barcelona have made their transfer targets very public and thus everyone knew which players they were trying to replace. Andreas Christensen has been their main target so far and he would obviously replace the ailing Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti. He will most likely replace Gerard Pique on the main team, as the veteran defender would take a back role and play fewer games. However, Christensen is not the only player they are going for. They have also made it clear that they want Cesar Azpilicueta from Chelsea, Noussair Mazraoui from Ajax and Jose Gaya from Valencia. In a nutshell, they are looking for new full-backs as well.
Barca’s current full-backs, Jordi Alba, Dani Alves and Sergino Dest have all become expendable now and Xavi Hernandez has decided that none of them can be in the main team from next season onwards. While age has finally caught up with the likes of Alba and Alves, Dest never managed to fit into the Barca team and after the departure of Ronald Koeman, his time with the Catalan side was pretty much over. He was not selected by Xavi at all and Alves remains as the main right-back even though he is 38 years old.
Barcelona set to renew Dani Alves’ contract
While the Catalans are looking for replacements, they cannot let go of these full-backs just yet in case their transfer plans fail. According to Ferran Correas (via Reshad Rahman), the Blaugrana have decided to renew Alves’ contract by one more year however, it will not be an insignificant renewal. The new deal will give the Brazilian increased wages and this might be a sign of gratitude for what he has done for the club this season. Even at this age he tried to do his best and performed better than Dest. Thus, even if the Catalans do not find a replacement for Dest next season, Alves will be there to take that position.
