Barcelona were in shambles after Lionel Messi left. The club depended heavily on him for goals and the Argentine legend scored 38 goals in 45 appearances in his last season. As soon as the player left the club, there was a void and a lack of goals. Memphis Depay was brought in to fill in the space left behind by the Argentine but he was not consistent enough in front of the goal and later an injury messed up his chances as well. Xavi Hernandez understood that the attack needed some reinforcements and thus, he brought in three new players in January.

This ignored Barcelona star wants to show his worth to the team

The players that Xavi brought in, Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have made a perfect trio in the attack and it does not seem like the manager will drop any one of them any time soon. Torres and Aubameyang in particular have been very impactful and thus it is hard to see Depay back into the team. In an interview with Ziggo Sport, the player was asked whether he sees himself back in the team any time soon and he replied,

"“It is normal that there is competition here for me, I play for the best club in the world,”“I was injured at a bad time of the season, but now I’m fit and happy again and I scored two goals. I need to show that I belong to the starting team.”_Source Barca Blaugranes via Ziggo Sport"

This is the sort of competition and passion that Barca needs and if Depay is ready to work hard and provide good competition, then he need not be sold in the next window. The former Manchester United winger played extremely well in the Ligue 1 and thus he was brought into Barca by Ronald Koeman. He has star quality but he needs to find his footing. However, if Erling Haaland is coming in next summer, then there is no reason for the Dutchman to stay.
