Paris Saint-Germain’s failure to convince Lionel Messi to put pen to paper on a new contract yet has led to inevitable suggestions of a potential return to Barcelona. The La Liga leaders are understood to be very keen on bringing their club legend back to Camp Nou, and it seems there’s some dialogue between the Argentina international and Barca.

Messi, in the summer of 2021, as he had done for the past 18 years, was getting ready to don the Barcelona shirt. A few days later, he was holding PSG’s jersey in the French capital, to the astonishment of many.

Now, in 2023, there are hopes among the Blaugrana faithful that Messi, whose current PSG contract runs down at the end of the season, will return to Camp Nou instead of extending his stay in Ligue 1.

Before Messi lifted the World Cup in Qatar, it was expected he’d sign a new deal at PSG to continue plying trade alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. However, in recent weeks, things appear to have taken a turn.

Situation of the attacking trio at Parc des Princes is far from certain, and the side’s form on the pitch has only invited more rumours. Bayern Munich ended PSG’s hopes of winning the Champions League in the round of 16 this season.

And they could be dealt another big blow by a European rival.

Barcelona intend to reunite with Messi at the end of the season. And according to Joan Fontes, club president Joan Laporta called the 35-year-old to apologise. It is added that the superstar is happy with the call.

This isn’t a major development in the transfer saga, and PSG remain in the driving seat for Messi’s services. But any kind of dialogue is still exciting from the Barcelona point of view considering the manner in which he departed.
