Barcelona eye Bayern Munich defender as Dani Alves’ successor
Barcelona are in a complicated financial position as the transfer ban placed on them by La Liga for failing to meet the Financial Fair Play regulations requires them to gain more than €200 million through player sales and wage cuts not to exceed the salary limit.
Until the Catalan giants meet the requirements, they will not be able to make any signings in the summer transfer window. Despite this, President Joan Laporta remains optimistic about the situation and guarantees the arrival of reinforcements.
Barca boss Xavi Hernandez is keen on reinforcing his right side and is scouting the market for ideal signings, however keeping the financial problem in mind, the board believe in exploring advantageous situations in the transfer market. One such opportunity is targeting soon-to-be out-of-contract players who would join the Catalans for free or cost-reduced transfer fees.

One such superstar with an expiring contract is Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard. The French international’s contract with the Bavarian side expires in 2024 and while the two parties are negotiating a renewal, the player’s agent is scouting the market for a potential exit.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are ready to invest in the 26-year-old, whose transfer fee is said to not be a problem for the Spanish giants considering he is 12 months away from potentially leaving for free.
Having said that, there are a few complications with his arrival with the biggest concern being the hefty salary the Frenchman would expect. Another issue is that the World Cup winner isn’t too keen on playing as a right-back and would prefer being a centre-back instead but with Xavi playing both Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde as right-backs from time to time, it may well be what the tactical requirements for Pavard will be.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona bids for the defender this summer as Xavi has shown his preference for Villarreal’s Juan Foyth as his ideal right-back signing.
