FC Barcelona are reportedly working on bringing back Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, who is also keen to wear the Blaugrana colours once again. Recent reports claim that Messi’s exit from Paris Saint-Germain is more or less sealed after the recent suspension and the Catalan giants have been exploring the options for registering him in La Liga, and it seems they are convinced of being able to make it happen.

Barca have studied the relevant factors and has concluded that Messi could be registered with a quarter of the last salary he received from the club in the 2020-21 season, amounting to around €100 million gross. Indicating that he could be on a €25 million contract for the 2023-24 academic year.

However, Messi’s net salary would be around 13 million euros, equivalent to the salary received by Robert Lewandowski. The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has stated that Messi could not be discharged in the current situation. Barcelona would have to lower the wage bill of the 2022-23 squad and comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations with the sale of players or a reduction in current contracts to carry out this feasibility plan.

Barcelona keen on signing Lionel Messi

Barca have reportedly offered Messi a two-year contract until June 2025, and they could have an option for a “one plus one” deal. This would allow the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to terminate the contract in June 2024. Leo’s return to Camp Nou would be a welcome development for the club and Barca fans around the world, after what felt like an improper farewell for the club legend when he left for PSG in August 2021.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Spanish giants will manage to execute their plan and whether the Argentine maestro is planning a reunion and for how long, as Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal have emerged as a strong option.
