Barcelona ended their four-year wait for the LaLiga title with an impressive 4-2 win over Espanyol on Sunday night.

The derby win at the home of their fierce rivals made the win all the more special. But the scenes after the full-time whistle ruined the mood of the Spanish champions.

Robert Lewandowski laid the foundation for the party at RCDE Stadium with an 11th-minute opener. Three more goals from Barcelona followed, including a second from the Polish striker to guarantee all three points. Goals from Javi Puado and Joselu for the home side came too late to put a stop to their rivals’ celebrations. The defeat also left Espanyol 19th on the league table, four points off safety.

The frustrating result led to some Espanyol fans taking the matter into their hands, as they stormed onto the pitch and chased dancing Barcelona players off the pitch. The lack of proper security from the hosts threatened to dampen the festivities.

Here’s what Xavi said about the incident:

"“What happened at the end? It was better to celebrate inside the dressing room, out of respect for the rival, but we shouldn’t give it any importance.”"

As far as celebrations are concerned, this is just the start in Catalunya. Barcelona’s men’s and women’s teams will have an open top bus parade through the city on Monday.

Barcelona Femeni have won their league title once again without a single defeat in a season. The men’s team have not been as dominant in recent years, but there are hopes that their 27th La Liga title and the first one under Xavi will kick-start an era of dominance similar to the one that the manager experienced during his playing days.

The 43-year-old became only the fifth man to win LaLiga with Barcelona as a player and a manager.
